1. Compression

When the body of the car gets shock from the road, then the tire will press the shock absorber. It turns out that this pressure makes the shock absorber shorten so that the piston moves up. This force of motion makes the space at the top of the piston narrowed. Instead, the bottom of the piston becomes widespread. What’s the result? The fluid at the top of the piston is pressed until it comes out.

Then the piston valve that has been depressed will open only one channel. The wiggle room becomes limited so that the fluid current from the upper chamber to the bottom of the piston slows down. The piston’s ascending motion also slows down. Finally this slow motion is able to dampen the shocks created.

2. Expansion

If the compression step is complete, then there is a condition called spring back force. This makes the shock absorber’s length return to normal. The piston inside also moved down.

The fluid will begin to flow up into the upper chamber of the piston. The fluid current from the lower chamber up again slows down the piston’s movement. The result is that the shocks the car receives become perfectly muted.
