“The journey of the Toyota Mirai without recharging demonstrates the capabilities of fuel cell electric car technology. This technology and the design ingenuity by the Toyota team have brought it to a milestone in history,” said Michael Empric, Guinness World Records judge.

Interestingly, the test team used the hypermiling technique, namely by turning off a number of accessories and inflating the tires excessively to maximize reach.

Indeed, driving patterns that are carried out are far from common habits and not all of them can be applied in everyday life. However, it must be admitted that this has made a new achievement in the automotive world.

To realize this record, Toyota entrusted the steering of the Mirai to Wayne Gerdes, an eco-driving driver who managed to break the Guinness record for lowest fuel consumption, and Bob Winger. The Mirai’s new record journey begins at the Toyota Technical Center (TTC) in Gardena, California on August 23, 2021 with a hydrogen tank full and sealed.

The next day, Gerdes and Winger drove through traffic jams on the San Diego motorway between Los Angeles and Orange County until the hydrogen ran out. Upon returning to TTC, the tank was checked by a jury from Guinness World Records and a record was recorded. On this trip, the Toyota Mirai consumed 5.65 kilograms of hydrogen with an energy consumption of 152 miles per gallon equivalent (MPGe).
